Why a Navy SEAL Trains Shooters with Glock Pistols

Ease of use and a consistent trigger pull are just two of the reasons given by trainer Kyle Defoor for recommending Glock pistols to both beginners and advanced students. “In my humble opinion, these reasons make Glocks the best pistols for new shooters,” said Defoor.

Defoor is the owner of Defoor Proformance, a tactical firearms training school that caters to military, government and civilian students. A former U.S. Navy SEAL, Defoor gained combat experience in Afghanistan during the Global War on Terror. After leaving the Navy, Defoor was the head of firearms and tactics training at Blackwater from 2004 to 2009.

In 2010, Kyle founded Defoor Proformance. The school offers a variety of tactical firearms training for pistol, carbine, urban sniper and CQB courses. Most of the training is done in the United States, but the company does provide training to coalition forces with State Department approval. Some classes are open to military and law enforcement students only, while others are open to anyone.

One of the restricted classes is a two-day Urban Climber course that mates well with the company’s Urban Operations class. In the Urban Climber course, students learn how to negotiate vertical obstacles in a city environment using low-profile, minimalist gear.

Defoor has seen a wide range of pistols in his military and training careers. Each year he trains between 1,000 and 1,200 students. Of those, he estimates that 80 to 85 percent are shooting Glock pistols. “The Glock pistols perform great,” said Defoor. “Without a doubt, Glock pistols are the most reliable handguns that I deal with.”

Defoor believes in the Glock platform enough that he carries the company’s pistols for his own safety. His pistol of choice is the Glock 19. Defoor believes the 9mm offers performance equal to other handgun chamberings, but without the additional recoil. “I’ve carried a 9mm for over 20 years now, and I’ve killed a variety of game with it,” said Defoor.

Training with Glock Pistols

Training with Defoor is a serious undertaking. Defoor emphasizes that simplicity and ease of use make Glock pistols superior fighting handguns. “I’m not a real big fan of safeties or decockers on a pistol for any reason. Unlike the rifles that we carry, pistols are kept in a holster with the triggerguard constantly covered, so I see no reason to make the task of shooting even harder when it’s really not necessary to begin with. I mean, it’s 2017. Do we really need pistols with hammers on them anymore?”
