New Oklahoma Concealed Carry Law Goes Into Effect

An Oklahoma law requiring graduates of the state’s concealed carry classes to apply for a license within three years of earning their certificate has gone into effect.

According to KSWO, the rule has been part of the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation (OSBI) for some time, but the state is now enforcing it as law.

“There has been a lot of speculation and misconception about the law change. Really the only thing that changes is that the certificate is only good for 3 years,” said Brad Caudill, the owner of Slickhills Firearms Training in Lawton.

As KSWO reports, Caudill says the new law is designed to ensure that licensed carriers keep their skills up to date with the latest rules and regulations. He also added that the law likely came about as a result of Oklahoma’s Open Carry law from last November.

If you completed training before November 1 and have failed to apply for your concealed carry license, you will have to retake the course.

“If you have an old certificate then you probably need to come through the class to get the new information,” Caudill told KSWO.

Upon completion, you can apply for a five year or ten year license, KSWO reported. Those who already have a concealed carry license will not be affected by the new law.
