A new Oklahoma law going into effect on November 1 will affect anybody applying for a gun license this year. According to the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation (OSBI), House Bill 2874 states that the Oklahoma Self-Defense Act (SDA) Gun Safety Training Course certificate is only valid for three years. Therefore, anybody who got their SDA certificate before November 1, 2011, and failed to submit an application for a license, will have to re-take the training course and get a new certificate after the law goes into effect. Read the full statement from the OSBI below.

People interested in getting their gun license who have completed their Oklahoma Self-Defense Act (SDA) Gun Safety Training Course should start the application process with the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation (OSBI) as soon as possible. House Bill 2874, which goes into effect on November 1, 2014, modifies the Self-Defense Act so that SDA certificates are valid for three (3) years from the date of training and demonstration of competency and qualification. Previously, SDA training certificates did not expire. Anyone who completed their training prior to November 1, 2011, who has not submitted an application, will need to re-take the training course and get a new certificate once the law goes into effect.

Visit OSBI’s website at www.ok.gov/osbi/Handgun_Licensing to submit your online application. Applicants who complete their online applications on or before the date of expiration of their certificate will have their applications accepted by the OSBI. Individuals submitting expired training certificates will have their applications returned. OSBI’s online application portal has proven to be quick and easy to use. Since the portal’s launch on January 14, 2014, more than 6,000 people have submitted their gun license applications online.

Currently, 199,731 Oklahomans have a license to carry a gun concealed or unconcealed.
