The New York Police Department (NYPD) graduated 607 rookies into its newest class Monday.

The class is the most diverse in the NYPD’s history, with 51 percent of the class made up of African-American, Latino or Asian members, according to the New York Daily News. Roughly 20 percent of the class is female.

Graduates will now be assigned to some of the most crime-ridden areas the city has to offer in a serious attempt to drop the annual crime rate.

Commissioner Bill Bratton told the class he intends to reduce the crime rate this year compared with 2013 — and to do that, he’s going to assign them to high-crime areas.

“I want you to learn from the best … so that for the next 20 years you understand what it means to be a cop,” Bratton told the New York Daily News.

The new recruits, will be joined by 600 additional officers who “will leave non-enforcement roles and join the rookies on the streets in high-crime precincts in the next week or two as part of the summer crime-fighting plan,” Bratton told the Wall Street Journal.
