In another example of anti-gun mania, an Oregon store clerk is looking for a new job because he stopped a hatchet-wielding robber with a gun. And he did so without even firing a shot. He just faced the robber down and sent him packing.

The incident was actually caught on surveillance video late last month. The Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office recently released the video in hopes of identifying the suspect.

“We’d like to reunite you with the hatchet you left behind after the clerk responded with a handgun and a 911 call and you fled the scene,” Sgt. Marcus Mendoza said in a news release.

The video shows a man in khaki pants and a dark sweatshirt walking past the store entrance before coming back. The face is covered. He then enters the store, walks up and lays a hatchet on the counter. That’s when the clerk casually pulls out a gun and aims it at the robber. The clerk then picks up the phone to call police. The robber, meanwhile, watches the scene unfold before pushing the hatchet across the counter and putting his hands up. He even gets down on his knees and almost seems to break down. That’s when, according to KOIN, the suspect supposedly said, “I’m sorry. I’ll leave.” The suspect then fled on foot. Police have not been able to find or even identify the suspect, which is why they released the video.

Company Wanted Oregon Store Clerk to De-Escalate Situation

Not long after this incident happened, Plaid Pantry, company that owns the store, fired the clerk, citing a zero tolerance for weapons. The company claims it trains its employees to de-escalate robbery situations. The company seems to believe this is the best way to prevent injuries to employees.

This situation, however, de-escalated pretty quickly, right about a good guy produced a gun. The incident also produced zero injuries, despite the fact the store clerk probably would have been justified to pull the trigger.

The clerk stayed calm, knowing gun trumps hatchet, and called the police to handle the situation. However, he was prepared to handle the situation if the robber had been more determined.
