Maxine Thompson told Fox 29 she was asleep at her home at around 4:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 5 when she was jolted awake by loud banging noises near the back door.
“First I thought I was dreaming and then I looked out the window, outside. I was still hearing the banging, banging, banging, so I yelled to whoever, ‘Who’s that on my door? Get off my door, get off my door,'” Thompson recalled.
The suspect ignored Thompson. Instead, he smashed a window near the door. He then used her backyard furniture to hoist himself up to and through it.
“Next thing I know I could tell he was inside my house and he was running up the steps,” Thompson said, according to CBS Philadelphia.
Home Invader Shot
That’s when Thompson managed to the handgun she got from her late mother off her nightstand.
“I snatched my gun and I started shooting at him and he ran down the steps and I ran down the steps behind him and started shooting some more and he jumped out that window back the way he came in,” she said.
The unidentified home invader ran a few blocks to a car wash and then called 911 to report that he’d been shot. He was transported to an area hospital with a gunshot wound to his upper arm. He’s reportedly been charged with home invasion.
Thompson, whose son is a Philadelphia police officer, said she was in pure survival mode when she pulled the trigger.
“Kill him before he killed me. That’s what was going through my mind,” she said.
Thankfully, Thompson was uninjured. However, she said she was shaken as a result of the attempted home invasion.
“After everything was over, then I did get a little shaky. He could’ve killed me,” Thompson said, adding that she hopes this serves as a lesson to any other bad guys out there.
“Stay the hell out of people’s houses,” she said.
