Rape Crisis Center Hosts Krav Maga Self-Defense Class in Savannah

The Rape Crisis Center of the Coastal Empire in Savannah, Georgia, in partnership with Fleet Feet, held its “Safe on the Run” self-defense class on Sunday, designed to help women feel safer in their everyday lives.

According to WTOC, the two-hour class builds self confidence, situational awareness, and a sense of personal safety, in hopes that it will help lower the number of rapes and sexual assaults in the Savannah community.

“I think this is very awesome to teach women how to protect themselves, when they’re out moving about to try to be prepared,” said student Gwendolyn Myers. “You never know what may happen at any given time.”

As WTOC notes, the class was taught by certified Krav Maga instructor Todd Mashburn at the Jewish Educational Alliance in Abercorn Street.

“A huge part of our mission is also to provide prevention, education, and awareness to our community at large. And this self defense course is one of the ways in which we help to bring awareness as well as introduce to individual ways that they can protect themselves,” Rape Crisis Center executive director Kesha Gibson-Carter said, according to WJCL.
