With freshly loaded ammo in hand, it’s time to head to the range for the most exciting part of the process: live-fire testing. This session will put our custom loads for both the .500 S&W Magnum and .338 Lapua to the test, providing invaluable insights into their performance. By comparing our dialed-down revolver rounds against factory full-power Hornady loads, we can assess not only the reduction in recoil but also how well our custom loads maintain accuracy and terminal performance. The .500 S&W Magnum is known for its incredible power and recoil, so dialing it down offers an opportunity to create a more manageable shooting experience without sacrificing too much power.
Reloading Zone Season 4 Episode 4
Shifting to long-range precision, we’ll see how our .338 Lapua loads perform at 400 yards. The .338 Lapua is a cartridge designed for extreme accuracy at extended distances, so this test will be a critical measure of whether our powder charge, bullet seating, and overall load development are truly on the mark. Shooting at this range will help us identify any necessary adjustments to improve consistency and accuracy, providing a valuable opportunity to refine our process further.
To wrap up the day, we’ll analyze the results with a slow-motion review of our pistol work. High-speed footage allows us to evaluate muzzle rise, recoil control, and follow-up shot potential, giving a clearer picture of how our custom revolver loads perform in action. For the rifles, we’ll use proportional measurement techniques to compare group sizes at short and long ranges. This will provide a clear assessment of the relationship between our adjustments and their impact on accuracy at various distances. The combination of real-world performance data and video analysis will help us fine-tune our loads, ensuring they meet the highest standards of precision and power. We would also like to thank Hodgdon and Frankford Arsenal for their help this season.
