VIDEO: Ruger Unveils the AR-556 MPR (Multi-Purpose Rifle)

Ruger has unveiled its new AR-556 MPR (Multi-Purpose Rifle).

Based on the AR-556, the key features on the AR-556 MPR include an 18-inch nitrided alloy barrel with a rifle-length gas system; 15-inch free-float handguard with M-LOK accessory compatibility; Ruger’s Elite 452 AR trigger; and ergonomic Magpul furniture. The company is touting the rifle for its versatility.

“We are very excited to add this model to our modern sporting rifle lineup,” Ruger President and CEO Chris Killoy said in a press release. “Our talented team of engineers worked carefully to develop the ideal custom package for the AR-556 platform that does it all, right out of the box. From plinking to competition shooting, the MPR is the perfect rifle for just about anything.”

The AR-556 MPR’s cold-hammer forged barrel with 5R rifling is contoured to mitigate weight, leaving a .75-inch journal for the low-profile gas block. The combination of the rifle-length gas system with a Ruger muzzle brake ensures smooth operation and reduced recoil when putting shots on target.

Meanwhile, the 15-inch free-float handguard features M-LOK accessory attachment points along the 3:00, 6:00 and 9:00 positions. On angled surfaces near the muzzle are additional slots for when you want to mount a light, laser or QD sling cup. When compared with a standard quad-rail forend, the 1.50-inch diameter handguard results in a forend that is slim and controllable, Ruger says. In addition, M-LOK-compatible Picatinny rail sections can be added, and the Picatinny rail at the 12:00 position is controlled to STANAG 4649 specs.

Rounding out the features on the AR-556 MPR is the Elite 452 two-stage trigger which boasts a 4.5-pound trigger pull; 7075-T6 aluminum forged, Type III hard coat anodized upper and lower; lower receiver fitted with Magpul’s MOE grip and MOE SL buttstock; and a shot peened and pressure tested 9310 alloy steel bolt.

Shipping out with one 30-round PMAG, the 5.56mm Ruger AR-556 MPR has a suggested retail price of $899.
