WalletHub recently released a list of America’s most dangerous and safest states for 2017.
In order to determine the safest states in America, WalletHub’s analysts compared the 50 states across 37 key safety indicators grouped into five different categories. Our data set ranges from assaults per capita to unemployment rate to total loss amounts from climate disasters per capita.
The five categories used are “Personal & Residential Safety,” “Financial Safety,” “Road Safety,” “Workplace Safety,” and “Emergency Preparedness.”
Finishing atop the overall list with an overall score of 65.09 was Vermont. On the opposite side of the spectrum with a score 30.70 was Mississippi, which ranked last by more than five points from the next closest state (Louisiana).

The Northeast dominated the top 10 safest states, with a total six states coming from that region.
Categorically, Vermont ranked first in “Personal & Residential Safety”; New Hampshire ranked first “Financial Safety”; Rhode Island ranked first in “Road Safety”; and Utah ranked first in both “Workplace Safety” and “Emergency Preparedness.”
