Savage Impulse: Savage Arms Introduces First Straight Pull-Action Rifle

Savage Arms just announced its newest rifle platform, the Impulse. The American-made rifle features a straight-pull action, redefining fast bolt-action design in a modern rifle.

Savage Impulse Details

The Impulse delivers and extremely fast bolt pull. The action centers around the new Hexlock. Providing a robust lockup, it enables the straight-pull Impulse to achieve reliability, speed and safety.

“IMPULSE will redefine the way you think about straight-pull rifles,” said Al Kasper, President and CEO of Savage Arms. “We’ve studied more than a century’s worth of straight-pull actions and kept running up against the same conundrum; straight pull actions are fast, but they don’t inspire confidence. Speed means nothing if you can’t hit what you’re aiming at. IMPULSE changes that. We’ve brought our tradition of accuracy into the mix to make the fastest, most accurate straight-pull rifles ever built.”

The Impulse, of course, delivers speed. The smooth bolt throw allows shooters to cycle rounds fast and intuitively. It eliminates the need for a standard four-direction bolt manipulation. Instead, the Impulse reduces split times, all without losing shooter cheek weld. So a shooter gets faster, and keeps his head on the stock as well. The speed of the bolt throw and lack of head movement makes for a drastic increase of speed on follow-up shots.

The Hexlock features six hardened steel bearings. They lock the bolt into place inside the receiver’s barrel extension. As pressure increases, Heclock’s hold tightens, according to Savage. It prevents any rearward movement of the bolt. One the round leaves the barrel, pressure subsides. The action then safely opens again with a straight pull of the bolt handle.
