WATCH: Testing the Savage Model 10 Stealth Evolution With Max Ordinate

Until recently, I believed that a precision rifle must fall squarely within a certain price range for it to be truly accurate and reliable. To be those things, a rifle usually can’t also be labeled “affordable.” But I learned something new when I took the Savage Model 10 Stealth Evolution in 6mm Creedmoor to California for a class at the Max Ordinate Academy.

In the two days of shooting at that beautiful facility, many truths were revealed. First, the Savage is truly a highly capable precision rifle. And, while I can’t believe I’m writing this, I’d even have to admit that it’s affordable. Not only that, but it’s better than you and as good as, if not better than, rifles three times its price. I’m not going to say it feels as smooth as some rifles, but I wouldn’t consider it a rough gun, either. It’s plenty adequate.

Another truth that was revealed: While prone shooting will always be my preferred way of sending “freedom pills” downrange, positional shooting skills are a necessity. And while I am a good prone shooter, my positional marksmanship leaves much to be desired, and my time with at the Max Ordinate Academy under the tutelage of Tyler Hughes left me hopeful, if not also a bit frustrated.
