SCCY DVG1RD: Exclusive Look at the Affordable, Optic-Ready Pistol

SCCY Firearms is best known for its well-built, double-action-only (DAO) semi-auto pistols, giving concealed carriers quality guns at affordable prices. According to Scott McGregor, the company’s national sales manager, “We’re not the biggest guys out there, but people sure pay attention to us!”

McGregor had flown to my hometown of Tucson to show me an exciting new gun from SCCY. “Our owner, Joe Roebuck, has been working on this tirelessly for the last couple of years, and we’re finally ready to launch the brand-new SCCY DVG series of pistols,” McGregor said. “We’ll formally introduce the gun at SHOT Show in January 2020.”

DVG stands for “David Versus Goliath,” and like all SCCY firearms, the manufacturer priced the new guns to make consumers notice. But larger competing manufacturers might be shocked by the pricing as well, which is likely the inspiration behind the name.

SCCY DVG1RD Details

What’s the biggest difference between the DVG line and SCCY’s existing CPX pistols? The new DVG has a striker-fired action. Those who have been asking for a shorter trigger pull with a short, firm reset won’t be disappointed by the new line, either. While the earlier CPX models have long DAO trigger pulls of about 8 pounds, the new DVG guns have much lighter 5.5-pound pulls with shorter travels.

“Striker-fired pistols were the next logical evolution of our product line,” McGregor said. “We’ve had loyal SCCY customers asking for this for a couple years, and we’ve been working to give them what they’re asking for. We have sold a boatload of CPX guns, and we’ll continue to simply because they work well and are well made, but also because they have an unbelievably low price point. The DVG-1 won’t disappoint, either.”

McGregor brought along a couple of DVG samples: an iron-sighted model as well as one outfitted with a reflex sight. The latter, the DVG-1RD, has an MSRP of just $389, which means it’ll be available for under $350 in the real world—and that’s with the reflex sight! The standard DVG-1 will run about $350, which puts its real-world price close to $300.

The DVG-1 is chambered in 9mm and has a 3.1-inch barrel. It weighs just 15.5 ounces with an unloaded 10-round magazine. And the gun uses a dual recoil spring setup. Finally, though the gun looks very similar to the CPX, parts are not interchangeable except for the magazine.

Final Thoughts

The SCCY DVG1RD totally impressed me. It was accurate and reliable, and the reflex sight worked amazingly well, even in Arizona’s bright daylight. But perhaps the most impressive thing about the pistol is its price. If you’ve toyed with the idea of dipping your toe in the carry-optics pond, the DVG-1RD is an inexpensive way to give it a try.
