VIDEO: Shooting the ‘Rail Gun-Tech’ E-Shotgun Coil Accelerator

Every now and again, we truly get our hands on something new and different. Such was the case recently for content creators Frank Melloni and Alex Landeen. Those boys just got to shoot something radically different from the norm when they each tested out the E-Shotgun Coil Accelerator.

Shooting the E-Shotgun Coil Accelerator

For those not in the know, the E-Shotgun brings some of that urban legend tech we gun nerds have been geeking out on since at least the 1990s. We’re talking about rail gun technology. The secret massive naval machines used in covert missions of our dreams. Or sometimes in the movies, whatevs. Once we get past all the novelty, the tech actually has been around for some time.

“Interestingly enough, the tech has been around for several decades with its formal name being the ‘linear induction motor,” wrote Melloni in his review. “It is heavily utilized in manufacturing, namely to move products down an assembly line. However, weaponization of it just hasn’t been pursued very aggressively. The most significant drawbacks are that the component needed to make it are monstrous, namely the capacitors.”

But the E-Shotgun does bring an interesting array of features and capabilities to bear. Compared to traditional firearm systems, you might call the E-Shotgun nearly silent. It also lacks a blast signature or a trail of smoke. Firing rounds downrange leaves no spent casings or shells behind, either. And the system, as the video shows, produces very little–next to none-–felt recoil.

In fully-automatic fire, the E-Shotgun also produces a very high rate of fire–to the tune of 3,000 founds per minute. And these discs, sans traditional bullets, bring a heavy, 275-grain projectile to target. But alas, it does so with only 12.5 ft-lbs of energy. This one is billed as a less-lethal device, for now.

So ultimately, this E-Shotgun might not be the gun you want today. But it also might just unlock the next defensive, hunting, sporting and very lethal guns of tomorrow. To learn more, visit e-shotgun.com.
