Legion Above All

The X5 Legion isn’t just “another new gun.” That “Legion” connotation is SIG-nificant — see what I did there? To really appreciate all it has to offer, we need to first understand what the Legion series actually is.

SIG Sauer took note of how often gun owners customize its guns and wanted to offer them the same experience, except this time out of the box and ready to go; thusly, the SIG Legion series was born. Legion handguns are fully customized and designed, incorporating high-end, precise parts with input from some of the most elite professionals around the world. They meet and exceed the expectations of the elite. As SIG Sauer states, “These are serious tools, for serious users.”

Upon purchasing a handgun from the Legion series, you not only own a top-of-the-line precision firearm, but you’re now a member of an exclusive community. A community that SIG Sauer describes as a brotherhood of like-minded people who push themselves and their gear to the limits. Membership to the Legion community comes with your gun purchase and is official when you register your gun’s serial number. Shooters obtain members-only access to unique opportunities and gear, special promotions, and access to a new and enhanced line of products. Each new member receives a Thermo-Mold carrying case for their firearm and a challenge coin specific to their gun. These are just highlights. There is so much more that goes into the program. The point is membership definitely has its privileges.

Welcome, the SIG P320 X5 Legion

For a handgun to become inducted into the Legion series it must be elite, the best of the best; the SIG P320 X5 Legion more than exceeds that criteria. Aesthetics are the first thing I notice with a new firearm. The signature Legion Gray color and clean lines of the X5 Legion are most certainly eye-catching, but the lightning cuts along the top of the slide really caught my attention. The look of this gun holds the same spirit of the P320 in that it has an almost “futuristic” feel. It’s quite fitting as these guns play an intricate part with SIG Sauer’s desire to re-define the world of modern firearms in the 21st century.

Handling the gun, the very first thing I noticed was its weight. The X5 Legion has a little bit of heft to it; not enough to make it an uncomfortable shooting experience, but you immediately notice this is very different than the polymer guns most of us are used to. Why? The X5 is made using tungsten. I found this to be absolutely fascinating. The frame is comprised of a heavy XGrip module that is TXG Tungsten infused. Not only does this allow for a beautiful and smooth texture, but the small amount of heft aids in managing recoil. With proper grip, recoil is very minimal with the X5.

Range Time

Having ample time on the range with the X5 Legion proved this gun lives up to the expectations that come with the Legion moniker. As previously stated, the pistol has very minimal recoil, allowing me to have consistent groups, more control and repeated accuracy. The prominent and easily accessible magazine release coupled with the flared competition magwell make reloads quick, easy and exceptionally smooth.

Normally when running a new gun there are usually one or two features that really stand out to me. With the X5 Legion, it was almost every feature. As a woman with smaller hands, running the slide release can sometimes be anywhere from a little tricky to just plain difficult. The slide release on the X5 was neither for me. With minimal effort I was able to run it without an issue or any amount of extra effort. The lightened, skeletonized flat trigger lends a smooth, crisp pull with a very short reset allowing for faster follow-up shots. One of my favorite features are the Dawson Precision fiber optic front and adjustable rear sights. The rear sight is easily adjustable while also being completely dark. Having the rear sight dark enables better focus and quick sight acquisition.

Regarding function, the X5 Legion was again above par. I had zero feed issues and zero malfunctions. I ran more than 400 rounds with a varying mix of ammunition. The X5 performed well with each round. I first ran SIG Sauer’s own ammunition, which of course performed flawlessly. I wanted to up the stakes a bit and run ammunition of varying brands to see if the X5 Legion could handle it. From Federal Syntec Training Match in 124 gr. 9mm to Hornady Critical Defense in 147 gr. 9mm, the pistol ate every round it was fed without issue.

Final Thoughts

The SIG P320 X5 Legion far exceeded any expectations I had. Not only is this gun beautiful, it’s powerful as well. SIG Sauer has come out with an amazing new gun to proudly add to its exclusive Legion lineup. This isn’t a gun you simply just shoot, it’s one you experience.
