With a focus on concealed carry and ease of operation, Smith & Wesson builds on the EZ platform with its new Equalizer. As a result, comes a micro-compact pistol that shares many traits from the Shield EZ that new shooters will love. However, the concealability and feature-rich platform will equally appeal to experienced shooters as well.
The Smith & Wesson Equalizer Micro-Compact 9mm
Chambered in 9mm, the Equalizer offers a larger capacity than the Shield EZ with its 10, 13, and 15-round magazines. However, the 6.75-inch micro-compact offers optimal concealability and all-day carry comfort. Even with its micro-compact size, the 3.675-inch stainless steel barrel with Armonite finish still provides an ample sight radius.
The polymer frame features a grip safety and new grip texture and pattern for more control when firing. Additionally, a three-slot Picatinny rail sits just forward of the trigger guard so you can affix your choice of accessory. Providing ambidextrous operation, the magazine release is reversible but comes set up for right-handed manipulation.
Riding atop the frame is stainless steel slide with Armornite finish and easy-to-rack technology. As a result, even new shooters or those with hand strength challenges will be able to easily manipulate the slide. Correspondingly, deep, aggressive forward and rear cocking serrations help with a solid purchase while racking.
The slide features an optic cut, allowing you to add the optic of your choice. However, if you choose to forgo an optic, the slide includes a white dot front sight coupled with a white 2-dot rear sight.
The single-action trigger has a short take-up, clean break, and fast reset, allowing for quicker follow-up shots. Likewise, the low recoil impulse makes it easy to shoot and quick to get back on target for your follow-up.
“The EQUALIZERâ„¢ is a total package micro-compact pistol. Its multi-purpose design allows for a variety of setup options for use at the range and/or for personal carry, while not compromising on firepower or comfort,” said John Myles, Senior Manager of New Products.
Editor’s Note:
I spoke with Smith & Wesson, who notified me that the optic cut utilizes a modified Shield cut footprint. As a result, it can direct mount any optic with the Shield SMS footprint. But due to the modification, it will also direct mount the Holosun 507K. However, if you have an optic that features any other footprint you will need an adapter plate to use your optic.
