Sneak Peek: Heckler & Koch’s New Striker-Fired VP9

The new VP9 pistol from Heckler & Koch is a polymer-framed, striker-fired pistol chambered in 9mm. HK introduced the world to the concept of polymer-framed handguns when the company released the striker-fired VP70 more than 40 years ago. The VP9 draws on that heritage, and HK has applied extremely high-tech engineering techniques to make one incredibly reliable handgun.

The VP9 pistol is a duty-sized handgun, and it’s perfect for law enforcement and military use. Of course, civilians will also fall in love with its features. All of the controls are ambidextrous, and the gun comes with interchangeable grip side panels and backstraps. For law enforcement agencies that issue their duty guns, this means the VP9 can be adjusted to fit nearly every hand size and will run equally well for left- and right-handed shooters. You’ll also note the ambidextrous slide release, which features an elongated paddle on the right side of the frame.

Unique to the VP9 are the charging supports at the rear of the slide.  These “wings” give a shooter more of a sure-fire grip when working the slide. If you’re wearing glove, or your hands are wet or covered in mud, these supports can help you positively manipulate the slide and get back into action quickly.

Although the HK P30 is a hammer-fired gun, it does share some commonalities with the new VP9.  The VP9’s standard magazines carry 15 rounds and are interchangeable with the existing P30 magazines. Some, but not all, holsters designed for the P30 will also work with the VP9. Finally, the MSRP for the VP9 is $719.
