Earlier this year, Ruger announced its Ruger Gunsite Scout Rifle, the ideal “fighting carbine” in .308 that is a credible rendition of Col. Jeff Cooper’s scout-rifle concept. Cooper called for a relatively lightweight, hard-hitting, do-it-all rifle that, in the hands of an accomplished shooter, was able to place accurate, sustained fire out to long ranges yet was quick-handling and light enough for all-day carry. Straying a bit from Cooper’s ideal, the Gunsite Scout tips the scales at 7 pounds empty, so it’s a tad heavy. But that certainly didn’t hold the rifle back when it came to performance. From the range, author Jay Langston reports, “Cooper’s idea of minimum accuracy requirements was based upon three-shot groups under 2 MOA, and all loads tested in the Ruger Gunsite Scout outperformed this by a wide margin.
