Springfield Armory has redesigned the stock and external features of its vaunted SOCOM 16 rifle to create a carbine that’s factory-adapted for the close-quarters battle (CQB) seen in modern combat.

Springfield’s creation is dubbed the SOCOM 16 CQB, which retains the 7.62x51mm NATO chambering and gas-operated mechanics of the M1A platform while adding new functionality via a high-strength polymer stock.

That stock is where the action’s at with the SOCOM 16 CQB, with a new multi-position collapsible stock that can accommodate tactical vests, winter layers and T-shirts alike, while providing the proper length of pull and a repeatable cheekweld. The stock adds a pistol-style grip more in the manner of an M4 than in the rifle-stock manner of prior M1A designs, which aids in maneuvering in confined spaces.

There are three new locations on the rifle for QD sling swivel mounts, and three lengths of Picatinny-style tactical accessory rails on M-LOK attachment positions on the forearm—with a length of slick forearm behind them for your support hand to properly grasp the rifle. The receiver retains the scout scope rail, and the mil-spec iron sights are classic.
