Suspect Dead, Homeowner Wounded After Botched Home Invasion in Texas

An attempted home invasion in Freestone County, Texas ended with one suspect dead and the homeowner seriously injured Monday morning.

According to KWTX, 45-year-old Doug Hurst was asleep at his home located at 135 Private Rd. 871 off Highway 84 near Teague when he was awakened by the sound of three intruders breaking in through the back door at approximately 1:30 a.m.

Hurst took action, grabbing his gun and moving to confront the men.

That’s when gunfire erupted.

Hurst was shot in the abdomen. He managed to return fire and shoot one of the suspects, who then fled the scene with his two accomplices.

Police arrived and discovered the body of 19-year-old Joshua Mulkey in the backyard, dead of a gunshot wound. A semi-auto handgun was found near the body.

As KXXV reports, the two accomplices, identified as O’Jarion McLenon, 18, and Lawson Abram, 18, were both arrested nearby and are currently being held in Freestone County Jail. They each face charges of aggravated robbery.

Hurst was transported to Baylor Scott & White Hillcrest Medical Center in Waco, Texas in critical condition.
