Taser’s Axon Signal Sidearm Alerts Body Cams of Gun Draw

Taser is expanding its Axon Signal line with the release of the new Axon Signal Sidearm, a wireless sensor designed to alert Axon body cameras when a firearm is removed from an officer’s holster.

Here’s how it works: once the gun is drawn, the sensor is triggered and all Axon body cameras within a range of 30 feet will start recording. The signal works with Axon Body 2, Axon Flex 2, and Axon Fleet in-car cameras.

According to the press release, the wireless Signal Sidearm is compatible with most existing firearm holsters and attaches to the holster without interfering with normal, daily use. The devices are operated by a coin cell battery that lasts around 1.5 years and alerts the user via the Axon network if the battery happens to be running low.

“When law enforcement officers must draw a weapon, the last thing they should worry about is their technology,” said TASER CEO and Co-Founder, Rick Smith. “The Signal Sidearm will give officers the same confidence in their technology that already exists in encounters involving Smart Weapons that use our Signal technology. It’s an important step in extending the reach of the Axon network to connect other devices.”

There’s no word on the MSRP, but Taser says the Axon Signal Sidearm will be out and available for purchase in Q3 2017.
