Taylor’s & Co. Firearms makes a wide range of cartridge and blackpowder reproduction pistols that use modern metallurgy and manufacturing standards to recreate iconic firearms of the 1800s, and this year the company has added the Smoke Wagon Short Stroke single-action revolver.

Outwardly the same as Taylor’s established Smoke Wagon revolvers in .357 Magnum, .45 Colt and .44-40, the Short Stroke models feature hand-tuned internal components that require a minimum of rearward hammer travel to engage the stop and ultimately ignite the cartridges properly.

Rather than camming all the way rearward, requiring more time and effort to cock and resulting in longer lag time between hammer release and ignition, the Short Stroke’s action positions the hammer only partway to the rear—just far enough that the hammer face is barely below the rear sighting groove. The trigger breaks after only 3 to 3.5 pounds of pressure, and the hammer falls with ample energy to ignite modern centerfire cartridges.

This system greatly speeds up the firing rate of the single-action Smoke Wagon Short Stroke, and it enhances your accuracy potential with the diminished lag time before ignition.
