Few companies have been able to carry the title of King of the Hill like Mossberg. They have been building guns for over 106 years and have earned a reputation for performance. With such a successful lineup, most companies would set it on cruise control and just ride their accolades. That is not the case with Mossberg, and today, they are announcing not one but two new launches. Say hello to Mossberg’s new “R” and “Professional Series” guns.
The New Rotary Safety and Professional Series Guns from Mossberg
The new R series guns were inspired by a military contract Mossberg was commissioned to fill. This organization wanted Mossberg’s performance but with a shotgun incorporating more traditional AR-style controls. The result is a new pistol grip shotgun design with rotary-style safety and AR furniture.
These guns are built with the same high-quality components as other Mossberg guns. This includes an exceptional receiver. It features lightweight aircraft-grade aluminum construction, steel-to-steel bolt-to-barrel lock-up, and an electroplated finish for superior durability. Mossberg has included a Picatinny rail to allow the mounting of optics as well. A quick look at the loading port will show that it has been enlarged and beveled for easier loading. It also has an extended follower.
AR Style Operations
Where the guns take a new turn is in the operation features. These guns incorporate a rotary-style safety switch like we see on AR rifles. It is ambidextrous and has a very accessible ergonomic design. Mossberg moved the bolt release to go along with the pistol grip design. The new position is optimized for the pistol grip. Its location doesn’t require the shooter to break their firing grip to operate it. Mossberg has even taken this opportunity to improve their trigger. These new guns will feature a flat profile trigger with a clean break and reset.
Moving forward with the gun, we also have a new design for the forend. Mossberg wanted to fine-tune this component and succeeded. They modified the design to be not only more ergonomic but also firmer. The new forend is an innovative four-piece design that drastically reduces play. Just forward, Mossberg has installed an M-Lok adapter for lights or other accessories. Contrary to what we see with similar devices, the magazine tube endcap holds this one in place.
AR Style Stock
The AR similarities stand out most obviously at the rear of the gun. The guns use a classic AR-style stock, but there is more than meets the eye. The stock adapter is a single-piece steel-reinforced polymer. It has both right and left-side QD cups for slings and accepts most standard stocks. What I found very innovative was the inclusion of an integrated safety protection. This small stock extension sits above the safety and helps keep it clear of gear.
Mossberg has given us four different guns in this new R category. First, we have the much respected and successful model 590. The new 590R will come in two flavors. The first version of the 590R will have a classic barrel profile, and the second will have a breacher-style stand-off device. The second set of guns is in Mossberg’s successful mag-fed lineup. The new 590RM will come in the same barrel profiles as the 590R. One note on the new 590RM. Mossberg has improved the magwell on these guns, and they now have an integrated magazine guide and an AK-style magazine release.
Fast Sight Acquisition
In totality, the new design of these guns is a winner. They are very easy to run and provide very quick sight acquisition. The ergonomics are solid, and the new trigger design is a winner. More importantly, these guns are all built with the classic Mossberg commitment to quality. They even take the time and energy to anodize small parts on the guns.
But Wait, There’s More – The New “R” and “Professional Series” Guns from Mossberg.
As the saying goes, “But wait, there’s more!”. Mossberg is releasing its new “Professional” series of guns along with the new R series. Guns in this category are hand-built to the same rigorous specifications held only for military and government contracts. While standard quality control is great at Mossberg, these guns will be scrutinized even more. Guns in their new category will also get some special love before heading out the door. This includes a Cerakote finish on the receiver, barrel, magazine tube, and an optics cut. The guns will also have new low-profile ghost ring sights should you choose to go without an optic.
One last thing about these guns is that they are all shipped with a short length of pull stock. This allows the guns to more readily fit a larger number of shooters. Managing a gun with a long length of pull can be difficult. However, regardless of your size, you can easily shoot a shotgun with a shorter LOP.
A Variety of Models to Choose From
Mossberg has several guns in its new Professional series. These include three different short breacher guns for law enforcement and multiple versions of the classic 590A1. I am excited that Mossberg will also offer these professional-grade 590A1s in a variety of colors, including tungsten Cerakote. Are you a 590M fan? Fear not—they have a magazine-fed version in this new series as well.
One last addition to the Professional line steps outside the shotgun world. Mossberg has included a version of their iconic MVP Patrol Rifle. This AR-15/ AR-10 magazine-fed bolt-action rifle will be chambered in 5.56 NATO, 300 Blackout, and 7.62 NATO.
More to Come – The New Mossberg “R” & “Professional Series” Guns.
Now you are sitting there thinking – “He seems to have a lot of information.” I was fortunate to get an early look at all these new products. I was invited to join Mossberg at the world-famous Gunsite Academy to test drive these guns and offer suggestions on improvements. Over several days, we ran hundreds of rounds through these guns and enjoyed every minute. Each gun performed well and is a story in and of itself. With that, consider this general information piece a teaser. You can look forward to a more detailed look and videos on individual guns in these new lines shortly. While I am not a fan boy of any company, I can absolutely say that Mossberg has done it yet again and hit it out of the park.
