When Taurus released their G2c pistol, it was a game-changer for them. It was a solid, reliable, and easy-to-shoot gun. Realizing that they had found the magic formula, Taurus continued in that arena with other winners like the GX4. Today, Taurus is giving us yet another option in that lineup. Say hello to The New Taurus GX2.
The New Taurus GX2
The GX2 is a striker-fired 9mm pistol designed for everyday carry. After training with this pistol, I can tell you they succeeded. The gun has a sharpshooter barrel for solid accuracy and a hinged trigger safety. This has a great feel and provides a clean break. The GX2 also has a Picatinny 1913 accessory rail. The rail accommodates most compact pistol-sized tactical lights, laser sights, or light/laser combinations. It comes with a manual safety and has good ergonomics. Lastly, the gun has a hearty stainless-steel chassis and gives us a 13+1 capacity. When it comes to EDC pistols, The New Taurus GX2 stands out.
The New Taurus GX2 Test Drive
Taurus was kind enough to invite me to their writer’s event at Gunsite Academy in Arizona. The world-renowned Gunsite instructors would run us through a custom handgun course. We would all be set up to run the new GX2 and see how it would perform at pace. After a thorough safety brief, we were on the range.
We ran the GX2 in various drills ranging from pure accuracy tests to speed. The pistol performed well, and I found it to be very accurate. While most of our time was spent on the square range, Gunsite also had some surprises for us. If you are not familiar with Gunsite, you are missing out. One of the sessions was dedicated to letting us run the GX2 in a home defense situation. We made our way to the shoot house and were soon clearing rooms. I found this to be one of the best tests of the gun because it was a real-world application. We also ran the GX2 in the legendary Urban Scrambler range. This range consists of various steel at various distances that must be engaged from barricades and cover. Once again, it was a very good test of The New Taurus GX2.
Solid Performance
When the class finished, I had a few minutes to dive into how the gun had performed. The big question I always ask myself after events like this is, “Would I carry this gun to protect my life?” My answer is yes, I would. It performed well and far beyond its price point. The gun is a bit of a bridge in design. It is more feature-rich and comfortable than the G2c but not quite to the level of the GX4. This is an intermediate addition to the line with a very nice price point. Coming in at just over $300.00 MSRP, you can easily find The New Taurus GX2 in the high $200 range at retailers.
Affordable Doesn’t Mean Cheap
Brett Vorhees, President and CEO of Taurus, shared his thoughts on the gun: “The GX2 is the culmination of all the process improvements we’ve done in engineering and QC in Brazil. The result is that we can make a high-level striker-fired gun at the price point of the G2c.” He also hit home the idea that “Affordable Doesn’t Mean Cheap.” This is absolutely the case with The New Taurus GX2.
If you are looking for a solid-performing EDC handgun, I would encourage you to look at The New Taurus GX2. Don’t be nervous about the price. The gun performs on par with a pistol twice its price. You won’t be disappointed.
