As a hard-core knife guy, my head turns each time I see a new blade. While I am rarely disappointed, most knives are a variation on a theme. A new folder that, while beautiful, is still just a folder. A new fixed blade? You have even more of my attention, but once again, it’s the same knife, with a different finish. Everything changes, however, once you start looking at blades from Black Side Customs. The most recent head turner is their new modern wakizashi. The Tokyo Drifter.

690 Years of Evolution – The Tokyo Drifter Wakizashi
The Tokyo Drifter is a small batch-produced blade made with the traditional Japanese wakizashi in mind. It features an aggressive reinforced tanto profile with a black Cerakote finish for corrosion resistance. This is a very capable blade, whether hacking and slashing unruly bushes around the yard or defending yourself against ninja attacks. The handle fits great in hand, with or without gloves. The peel-ply textured G10 grips make for a not-too-aggressive but secure grip. The handle scales are held in place with custom titanium hardware and have a lanyard hole at the butt end. Each one comes with a Kydex sheath ready with IWB loops and can be outfitted with your preferred mounting solution.

Razor Sharp
With an overall length of 22 1/4 inches and a 15-inch blade featuring a 14-inch sharpened edge, the Tokyo Drifter is built for versatility. It is easy to wield and comes in at only 23.2 ounces. Like its Japanese counterpart, it is easy to use one handed. While most blades we receive from companies are sharp, the Tokyo drifter takes that to a new level. The PSB27 steel has a Rockwell hardness of 58 to 61, which allows it to keep its razor’s edge. It is also easy to resharpen.
The Tokyo Drifter
Black Side Customs was born in New York with outside-the-box thinking and design. Along with the Tokyo Drifter, they have several other customs in their inventory that are worth a look. In a time when people are more serious than ever about “Oh Crap” gear kits, the Black Side Customs Tokyo Drifter is a blade you should have in your kit.
