Tips for Protecting Yourself Using School Supplies

In the wake of a stabbing at Royal Palm Beach High School in South Florida, Rick Seid — the founder and developer of Frontline Krav Maga and the Fighting Chance series of self-defense programs — is teaching students how to protect themselves using the tools at their disposal, such as a backpack, book or a piece of paper.

According to WPTV, Seid said a backpack could slow someone down if they’re trying to escape a dangerous situation, so he advises that a student keep their backpack on one shoulder in case they need to get rid of it. Plus, it can also be used as a means of protection.

“If someone is coming at you, you can use it as a shield to ward off a knife attack. You can use it offensively,” Seid says. He adds, “You could use it to throw it at an attacker. Follow up with a kick or just throw it, get their hands preoccupied and take off running into a line of safety.”

Similar to a backpack, a student can also use a book as both protection and offense, WPTV reported.

“If there happens to be a knife type of attack or something else that you need to use it for, you can quickly use this to shield not only your heart or vitals but use it as a block or fend off an attack,” Seid said. In terms of defense, “You want to use the edges. It doesn’t really help when it’s flat. you want to use the corners in every way possible,” Seid added.

Another method of protection is the “stun and run” technique, which involves rolling up a piece of paper and using it to poke someone in the eye.
