Trijicon has been awarded a contract to supply U.S. Special Operations Command (USSOCOM) with handgun reflex sights as part of its Miniature Aiming System – Day Optics program.

Under the terms of the award, the Michigan-based optics maker will receive $7,626,587 over a five-year period for an unidentified handgun reflex sight, which is described as a “”low profile, wide field of view, passive sight for rapid day and night pistol target engagements in confined spaces, while prisoner handling, or in extremis after the primary weapon malfunctions.”

This is a firm-fixed-price, indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity contract. Work is expected to be wrapped up by August of 2023. The contracting activity is NSWC Crane.

Trijicon Inc., Wixom, Michigan,* is awarded a $7,626,587 firm-fixed-price, indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity contract with a five-year ordering period for handgun reflex sights for the miniature aiming system – day optics program. The handgun reflex sight is a low profile, wide field of view, passive sight for rapid day and night pistol target engagements in confined spaces, while prisoner handling, or in extremis after the primary weapon malfunctions. Work will be performed in Wixom, Michigan, and is expected to be completed by August 2023. Fiscal 2018 defense procurement funding in the amount of $1,158,052 will be obligated at the time of award and funds will not expire at the end of the current fiscal year. The contract was competitively procured via the Federal Business Opportunities website, with three offers received. The Naval Surface Warfare Center, Crane Division, Crane, Indiana, is the contracting activity (N0016418DJQ25).

Trijicon’s ‘Handgun Reflex Sight’

There are a few things we can deduce from the announcement. First, since Trijicon won the award, it’s logical to assume that the company’s RMR Type 2 handgun sight will be provided. The RMR Type 2 is currently available in adjustable LED, dual-illuminated and LED variants, with aiming dot sizes ranging from 1.0 MOA to 13 MOA. The sight runs on a CR2032 lithium battery that lasts up to two years in the LED version, and up to four years in the Adjustable LED model at a setting of 4 out of 8. In addition, it’s made from 7075-T6 aluminum to Mil-Spec standards, weighs 1.2 ounces, and is waterproof up to 20 meters.

USSOCOM’s Glock 19

You’ll also notice that USSOCOM isn’t mentioned anywhere in the announcement. However, since NSWC Crane is the contracting activity, that’s where these reflex sights will undoubtedly be going. In addition, since USSOCOM is getting these sights, one can conclude that these sights will ride atop the Glock 19. USSOCOM carries the Glock 19. In 2017, USSOCOM revealed that—in a separate requirement from the MHS program—it needed a “low-vis” Glock 19, with the slide cut to accept a red dot sight.

Original Solicitation

The award doesn’t mention how many Trijicon RMR Type 2s will be delivered, but last September, NSWC Crane issued a solicitation for a maximum 14,350 units of the “Miniature Aiming Systems – Day Optics (MAS-D) Handgun Reflex Sight (HRS).” It appears that this award is the result of that solicitation.
