Troy, Alabama PD to Host Firearms Safety Course

Police in Troy, Alabama are set to offer a firearms safety and familiarization course for the first and only time in 2014.

According to the Troy Messenger, the two-day course will offer students safety tips, comparisons of several different pistols, use-of-force issues, and hand-on experience at a shooting range.

“It’s been two years since we had them,” said Lt. Bryan Weed. “But, we’re trying to bring them back.”

The reason for the two-year break between classes is due to the fact that the previous instructor, Sgt. Tim Hunter, retired. The upcoming class will be taught by Sgt. Ryan Nelson.

“The purpose of the course is to help people who have either not handled firearms or those who have firearms and aren’t comfortable with them,” Weed said.

As the Troy Messenger reports, the first session is set for Thursday, Sept. 25 in the Municipal Courtroom from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. The second session will take place Saturday, Sept. 27 from 8 a.m. to noon at the gun range.

Participants must be at least 21 years old. Cost of attendance is $10. All weapons and supplies are included.
