Uber, the mobile app that connects passengers with drivers, has announced a major change in its firearms policy.
According to a June 10 change, both riders and drivers alike will no longer be able to carry firearms in an Uber vehicle.
“We seek to ensure that everyone using the Uber digital platform—both driver-partners and riders—feels safe and comfortable using the service,” the Uber release reads. “During a ride arranged through the Uber platform, Uber and its affiliates therefore prohibit possessing firearms of any kind in a vehicle. Any rider or driver found to have violated this prohibition may lose access to the Uber platform.”
The Associated Press reported that before the policy change, the company had “deferred to local law on the issue.”
Competitor Lyft also has a “no weapons” policy. According to Lyft’s website, if a driver or rider is found to have a weapon in a Lyft vehicle they’ll be barred from the platform regardless of local laws on weapons possession.
