To many, the 22 WMR is a versatile multi-purpose round. The round is popular for small game and plinking, but many have chosen it as their self-defense round. Now, before you dismiss it, know that it is a 40gr bullet running at 1050 fps. While not up to the performance of 9mm or .45ACP, it still makes holes with decent penetration. A company that has seen interest in this round is none other than CCI Ammunition. Today, they have released a new round. The Uppercut 22 WMR JHP.

22 WMR is Popular for Small Game – But CCI’s Uppercut is for Self-Defense
The new Uppercut 22 WMR from CCI Ammunition offers self-defenders even more rimfire options. The new round features a 40-grain jacketed hollow-point bullet (JHP) with nose skiving, which initiates full and reliable expansion across all platforms.
“CCI Uppercut answers the call for self-defense with power and precision, and our new 22 WMR load delivers peak performance across all platforms,” said Steve Monniere, CCI’s Rimfire Product Line Manager. “Uppercut is CCI’s first-ever rimfire product line designed for defense and will undoubtedly be some of our most popular loads.”
The difference in CCI Uppercut lies in its exclusive projectile. Unlike the simple lead round nose or copper-plated hollow points typical of most rimfire ammunition, Uppercut’s jacketed hollow point bullet features nose skiving that initiates full and reliable expansion while retaining the weight needed to hit critical penetration depths. CCI’s legendary priming ensures it will always be ready when needed.
Any Gun is Better Than No Gun
For personal protection, you need to shoot with a handgun you are comfortable with. Some people simply can’t run a 9mm Glock or .357 MAG revolver. For some, a gun chambered in 22 WMR is a good solution. They have mild recoil, are relatively easy to shoot, and have plentiful ammo available.

These guns range in size from micro blasters to full-size 1911 frame styles. I will not say that the 22 WMR is a superior defensive round, but it can serve a purpose. I have run classes where many “tactic-cool” dudes groaned when I talked about 22 WMR, yet none of them were willing to let me shoot them in the leg with it. The point is that the 22 WMR is a good round when people are unable to shoot larger calibers.
