Qatar has announced a string of deals with US defense contractors worth an estimated $7.6 billion. According to Defense News, the deals, which were unveiled on the last day of the annual Doha International Maritime Defence Exhibition (DIMDEX), include Apache helicopters, Javelin missiles and PAC 3 Patriot systems.
One of the largest deals is with Boeing, Lockheed Martin, General Electric and Raytheon. Qatar inked a deal with those defense contractors to buy AH-64D Apache Block III Longbow attack helicopters and other equipment, parts and training at a cost of $2.4 billion.
Raytheon and Lockheed also won contracts to supply 500 Javelin missiles and other parts and equipment at a cost of $122 million. Last year, Qatar requested 500 Javelins, 50 command launch units and other equipment.
Lockheed and Raytheon will provide Patriot configuration-3 modernized fire units.
As Defense News reports, a DSCA notification to Congress on July 10, 2012 reveals that Qatar requested the sale of 24 Apaches, 56 engines, 27 target acquisition and designation sights, 27 night vision sensors, fire control radars, missile warning systems, radars and various other equipment, as well as 60 Hellfire missile launchers, 576 Hellfire II missiles, 295 Stinger Block I missiles, 50 Stinger air-to-air launchers, Hydra rockets and 90 Apache aviator integrated helmets.
