VIDEO: Range Time With Alexander Arms’ .338 Lapua Ulfberht

Militaries around the world have been clamoring for a solid and reliable semi-automatic rifle chambered in the highly effective .338 Lapua Magnum. The .338 Lapua has proven itself as a long-range, soft-target-interdiction round with years of exemplary service in bolt-action rifles.

Given today’s battlefield environments, however, semi-autos provide huge advantages, allowing operators to deliver fast and accurate hits at extended ranges. While a few .338 Lapua semi-autos have been a few developed in the last few years, the Ulfberht from Alexander Arms has garnered significant attention.

Given this rifle’s intended mission, I decided to test it with the help of my friend Chase “Pump” Stroud during one of his Pumps Precision Rifle ELR (Extra-Long Range) classes.

The course was held at the Cawthon Cartridge Club in Navasota, Texas, where it was possible to hit targets out to a mile away, or even farther in good weather. Torrential rain and a couple tornados kept us to just under a mile (1,625 yards), however, with lots of consistent shooting from 500 to 1,200 yards.

The accuracy and consistent operation of the Ulfberht was impressive. Using a Steiner M5Xi Military scope and Barnes ammunition, the rifle really shined.
