Bunce — who happens to be a combat medic with the National Guard — sprang into action. She quickly grabbed her home defense gun and met the suspects at her bedroom door.

A gun battle ensued in the stairwell area and Bunce was shot twice. The two suspects quickly fled the home.

“I think it was a shock to the intruders just as much as it was to her,” her husband, Paul Bunce, told WSOC TV. Paul says her training with the National Guard enabled her to stay focused and calm during the frightening encounter.

After she was shot, Semantha climbed back up the stairs to check on her baby. She then dialed 911.

Now, Semantha remains at Carolinas Medical Center, where she is being treated for her gunshot wounds. She still has at least one more surgery to go before she’s in the clear.

“This investigation is going full force ahead,” Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department Capt. Chuck Henson said. “They’re working it very, very hard and I’m very confident that we’ll have an arrest in it at some point.”

A GoFundMe page has been set up to help Semantha pay her medical bills. Click here to donate.
