In the United States, a gun owner is three times less likely to be the victim of a crime than someone who isn’t. Guns are used for self-defense at an estimated 2.5 million times each year. These stories are reminders that responsible gun ownership can indeed be a force for good.
Instances of self-defense and the deterrent effect of firearms can contribute to a safer society. Individuals have the means to protect themselves and others from immediate danger thanks to a gun. The debate on gun control must consider the positive impact that firearms can have in preventing harm. Striking a balance between responsible ownership and sensible regulations can pave the way for a society where guns can serve as lifesaving tools.
