A concealed carrying pharmacist in Pinch, West Virginia shot and killed an armed robber on Wednesday morning.
According to WOWK 13, a masked man later identified as 25-year-old Terry Gillenwater walked into Good Family Pharmacy at around 10:30 a.m. and pulled his gun, pointing it at pharmacy staff behind the counter.
That’s when pharmacist Don Ratcliff pulled out his own handgun and proceeded to open fire on Gillenwater. Ratcliff fired off three rounds, hitting Gillenwater once in the chest and once in the abdomen. The other shot hit Gillenwater’s gun, WV MetroNews reports.
Detectives said that after shooting Gillenwater, Ratcliff went to him and applied pressure to his wounds in an effort to save him. Gillenwater was eventually transported to CAMC General Hospital in Charleston, West Virginia, where he eventually died as a result of his injuries.
“He was here for the pills,” owner Patrick Good told MetroNews. “We’re a real small, small store here.”
It’s a shame that had to happen,” one customer told WOWK 13. “But there were eight other people in there. Who knows what could have happened?”
The case will be forwarded to the Kanawha County Prosecutor’s Office for review, but it is not believed that Ratcliff — who has a concealed carry permit — will face any charges.
