TESTED: SIG Sauer Canyon 10×42 Rangefinding Binocular

A rangefinding binocular is a valuable tool for hunters, shooters, and anyone who needs magnified optics and precise ranging capabilities in one package. Shooters and hunters are increasingly choosing ranging binos for the convenience and precision they provide. They combine two essential tools into one unit, streamlining gear and eliminating the need to switch between them in the field. This combination translates to faster target acquisition and ranging, which can be crucial for making an accurate long-range shot in tense hunting situations or competitions. The SIG Sauer Canyon harnesses these capabilities and more.

SIG Sauer Canyon Details

The ability to range a target without breaking eye contact allows hunters to stay hidden and avoid spooking wary game. Built-in ballistics features on some high-end ranging binoculars can even account for bullet drop at a glance, further enhancing accuracy and faster shots. SIG Sauer’s new Canyon rangefinding binocular combines high-quality optics with a laser rangefinder in a single, versatile unit stacked with features at a competitive price.

Magnification and Glass Quality

The SIG Sauer Canyon offers 10x magnification and 42mm objective lenses, providing a good balance between image clarity and field of view. With 10x magnification, the Canyon offers a significant zoom capability, bringing distant objects closer for detailed observation. This is particularly beneficial for identifying trophy game or assessing potential targets at longer ranges. The 42mm objective lenses provide ample light-gathering ability, ensuring clear views during dawn, dusk, and even in low-light conditions. SIG Sauer’s SpectraCoat anti-reflection coatings further enhance light transmission, resulting in a crisp and vivid image.

Rangefinding Performance

The Canyon rangefinding binocular boasts impressive ranging capabilities. It utilizes SIG Sauer’s Lightwave DSP technology, delivering fast and accurate distance measurements up to 4,000 yards on reflective surfaces. For more realistic hunting scenarios, the rangefinder can reliably measure distances of up to 1,500 yards on non-reflective targets like deer and elk.

The Canyon also offers multiple ranging modes, including Line of Sight (LOS), Angle Modified Range (AMR), and Ballistic Groups. The LOS mode provides a direct line-of-sight distance, while AMR accounts for uphill or downhill angles, giving you a more accurate representation of the true horizontal distance. Ballistic Groups allow you to program ballistic data for some of the most popular rifle calibers and common factory ammunition loads, which is unique and not included in other ranging binos in the same price range. All these features make the Canyon a valuable tool for long-range shooters and hunters alike.

SIG Kilo Canyon Features

Range ModeDescription
Line of Sight (LOS)Provides the line of sight range to the target independent of angle. The angle of incline / decline also displays. This method is preferred for long range shooters and hunters using an external ballistic calculator.
Angle Modified Range (AMR)AMR describes horizontal range to the target; used with ballistic reticles. The “rifleman’s rule,” proves very accurate for distances less than 400 yards.
Ballistic Groups (GRP)Rangefiner provides AMR range along with holdover in either MOA or MRAD, after selecting one of the onboard ballistic groups.
Archery Mode (ARCH)Archery Mode is used to compensate for shooting arrows at extreme up/down angles. It requires knowing the speed of your arrow which is entered into the rangefinder in FPS. The rangefinder will produce a solution as an equivalent flat range shoot-to distance. Beyond 200 yards, the AMR distance to the target will be returned.

Usability and Ergonomics

The Canyon design delivers comfort and ease of use. The rugged rubber armor provides a secure grip and protects the binoculars from bumps and scratches. The eyecups offer multiple adjustments to customize eye relief for a comfortable viewing experience. Thanks to the illuminated red OLED, the integrated rangefinder display is clear and easy to read, even in low-light conditions.

While the Canyon is not the lightest option in the SIG Sauer’s rangefinding binocular lineup, it is lighter than most of the other options on the market at a similar price point or even higher price. Backpacking hunters who value extreme light weight and compact size might want to consider upgrading to SIG Sauer’s KILO6K-HD Compact ranging binos. That said, the Canyon is a well-balanced binocular and more compact than many competitors.

On the Range

I took the Canyon ranging binos out on a recent range session with my 6.5 Creedmoor rifle to test the onboard ballistic groups. I shot Hornady 147-grain ELD Match ammunition, and the ballistic solution for 500 yards came within 0.1 MIL of my actual recorded DOPE at various yardages. This is close enough to hit a silhouette-sized steel target out to at least 500 yards.

Overall Impression

The SIG Sauer Canyon 10×42 rangefinding binocular is a compelling choice for hunters, competitors, and long-range shooters who value the convenience of having a combined binocular and rangefinder. It delivers excellent optical quality, impressive ranging performance, and user-friendly features at a competitive price. The rugged durability and weatherproofing are sure to make it a reliable companion on my hunting adventures for years to come.
