Some of the best products in the industry are collaborations between two companies. These companies are able to bring together their vision, engineering prowess, and manufacturing strength to various projects. The latest example is a collaboration between Ruger and Magpul, which resulted in the new modular RXM 9mm striker fired handgun.
Removable Fire Control Insert Makes it Easy to Customize the RXM 9mm
Now, before you dismiss this as just another striker-fired clone, we need to take a deeper look. There is more to this gun than meets the eye. The most important item is the removable serialized stainless steel Fire Control Insert. This sits inside an interchangeable Magpul Enhanced Handgun Grip for maximum flexibility and customization. Want a small frame with the regular slide and barrel? Just pop out the FCI and insert it into a different EHG of your choice. Want to go to a full-size grip? No problem. Once again, switch it out.
Gen 3 Design
The RXM is built around the beloved Gen-3 type design. This is compatible with many off-the-shelf holsters and accessories. There is no need to search high and low for one-off holsters or rare mags. The gun will fit right into your kit. The Magpul EHG has been well thought out. It includes Magpul’s 3/4-scale TSP texture for a secure grip without discomfort or damage to clothing during concealed carry. It also eliminates hot spots on your body during long days of EDC. Magpul even went so far as to include textured indexing pads for consistent finger and thumb placement.
Ruger and Magpul didn’t stop there. The EHG also includes a low-profile, flared magazine well for quick and easy magazine changes. This makes reloads fast and reliable. The trigger guard is undercut to allow a better grip and help reduce the knuckle hot spot we know so well from running a Glock. Those with bigger hands will appreciate an enhanced beaver tail that promotes a high grip for better control. Gone are the days of slide bite. They also included a magazine release scallop for easy access and a universal-pattern accessory rail for use with various lights and lasers.
Extended Mag Release
Manipulation-wise, they wanted the gun to be easy to run. Because of that, they included an extended magazine catch and raised slide stop. These two items make a big difference in getting and keeping your gun up and running. Ruger and Magpul have seen the writing on the wall, so the slide is pre-cut for optics. It allows for direct optic mounting of RMR, Delta Point Pro, and RMSc pattern optics.
The RXM 9mm Pistol has co-witness-height steel sights and features a tritium night front sight. This provides an excellent sight picture, with or without an optic installed. Another advanced feature is the is of a flat-faced trigger. This gives us a smooth trigger pull with a short tactile reset. Barrel-wise, they used an accurate precision rifled alloy steel barrel with an FNC nitride finish. Wrapping it up is an internal striker blocker and inspection port. The port allows for visual confirmation of a loaded or empty chamber.
Reliable Shooter
On the range, the gun performed well. I installed a Trijicon RMR-HD, and it fit perfectly. The gun is lightweight and easy to run. The trigger has a short, clean break. In fact, it is shorter than what I have experienced in other guns in this class. It was also accurate. I could easily shoot a 10-round ragged hole at pace at 10 yards. Having the optic directly mounted on the slide keeps it nice and low. This makes the overall footprint smaller. It also allows me to use co-witness sights that aren’t ridiculously tall. I ran the gun from an older Safari land holster I had, and it was a perfect fit. Once again, no need to scour the internet looking for a holster. You more than likely already have one in the closet. I was very pleased with the gun’s performance on the range.
Great EDC Option
The gun has personal defense and EDC written all over it. It is a serious shooter that is comfortable to carry concealed. “The RXM is the result of a tremendous collaboration between two of the most respected brands in the industry. Loaded with upgraded features, superior ergonomics, and a price that leaves room for further customization, this American-made handgun will become the best in its class.” Said Chris Killoy, Ruger President and CEO. He is right. This is a lot of guns for the money, and it comes from two major players in the firearms world. If you want a new EDC handgun, you should check out the RXM 9mm Pistol.
