‘You’re Going to Die’: Armed Grandmother Scares off Home Invader

An armed grandmother in West Virginia put the fear of God into a man trying to break into her home when she pulled a gun on him during the holidays.

Yvonne Gatens lives in the home she and her late husband built 40 years ago off Showen Hill Road in Putnam County, W. Va. On early Christmas Eve morning, she was awoken by the sound of somebody trying to open her bedroom window.

Alarmed, Gatens picked up her phone and dialed 911. She then grabbed the revolver she keeps in her drawer—she also has a rifle in the closet—walked over to the window, pulled the curtains and confronted the would-be intruder.

“I told him ‘you’re going to die’ and he fell over to the side,” the armed grandmother told WSAZ.

The suspect immediately took off from the scene. Putnam County Sheriff’s deputies arrived shortly thereafter and searched the neighborhood, but were unable to locate the man.

Gatens says she was fully prepared to pull the trigger in defense of her life.

“Right at the foot of my bed? I mean, give me a break,” Gatens said before issuing a warning to any future bad guys looking to break into her home. “If you come in here, it’s going to be you or me, and I’ll see to it that it won’t be me!”

The man remains at large and Gatens is encouraging neighbors to keep their eyes pealed for anything suspicious.
