Cobalt Kinetics has launched its new Model 27 rifle lineup, which the company says blends the feel of a hunting rifle with the “utility and versatility” of a MSR.

The California-Legal Cobalt Kinetics Model 27
The Model 27’s lower receiver and stock are designed enhance the shooter’s comfort and handling, Cobalt’s press release states. The receiver’s lower edge above the trigger has been lowered by .150″. The web of the grip has been raised “significantly,” which satisfies most states’ definitions to avoid being classified as a “pistol grip.” The grip’s shape and angle is “comfortable,” placing the hand slightly above and behind the trigger, Cobalt says. The stock, meanwhile, is fully adjustable for length of pull, drop, and cheek height.
If you’re reading this and you’re scrolling through the gallery above, you’re probably thinking this is all just a fancy way of saying “California legal.” You’d be right. Cobalt, however, claims this wasn’t the reason the rifle was made. In the presser, Cobalt said its designers wanted to make a “more traditionally proportioned rifle” which harkens back to the feel of the M-14 or wood-stocked hunting rifles of last century.
“We’ve been talking about this at Cobalt for a long time… to create a more traditional rifle that uses modern components to improve performance,” Cobalt VP Skylar Stewart said. “We have had a lot of requests for a semi-automatic rifle more suited for hunters and other sportsmen. I don’t like to compare it to other AR-15s. It does use many of the internal components of the AR-15, but we believe that it’s a step up from the old bolt action rifle.
“Eventually we will adapt this design to our XL lineup (large frame .308 pattern). That will really open up the possibilities for medium to big game hunters. We’re looking back in time for inspiration while also looking ahead. 27 is the atomic number for the element Cobalt. The twenty-seven line is a return to fundamentals,” Stewart added.
Options
Standing just 5.5 inches tall, the Cobalt Kinetics Model 27 fits in any normal-sized case or scabbard.
The Cobalt Kinetics Model 27 is available in four configurations: the Expert, Ranger, Hunter and Sentry. The Expert, chambered in .223 Wylde, is built for competitive shooting. The Ranger in 5.56mm NATO and with a 13.5-inch barrel is the most compact offering in the lineup. In addition, the Hunter, which comes in .223 Wylde, .224 Valkyrie and 6.5 Grendel, is built for taking down small to medium game. The Sentry in 5.56mm NATO is designed for armed professionals.
These rifles come in two different trim levels for various shooting sports and applications. MSRP is $3,495 – $3,760 for the Model 27 Expert. The Ranger goes for $1,995 – $2,250. Furthermore, the Hunter is priced at $2,395 – $2,895. The Sentry, meanwhile, is available for $1,765 – $1,940.
