WATCH: Firing the Desert Tech MDR, the Self-Defense Rifle of the Future

The Desert Tech Micro Dynamic Rifle blends firepower and adaptability into a bullpup package quite unlike anything else on the market. And at the recent Athlon Outdoors Rendezvous, we got the chance to send some rounds downrange with the MDR.

“This is a bullpup design,” explained Carson Jenkins, Desert Tech. “This is a 16-inch, suppressed rifle. We have full ambidextrous; we have safety, mag release on both sides. Another unique feature is a forward-ejecting system that we offer on the MDR. As you’re firing this weapon, strong side, your brass if coming out forward, and you can instantly switch to weak side, and brass will continue to go out forward and not hit you in the face. So this is the only fully ambidextrous bullpup rifle on the market.”

The MDR comes in both .223 Wylde and .308 Win. To provide even greater adaptability, the platform enables users to convert the rifle back and forth between the two calibers. Users change out the barrel, bolt, magazine and mag well, and the entire process takes about five minutes, according to Desert Tech.

At just 26.2 inches in overall length, the MDR emerges as one of the most compact rifles on the market. In a self-defense role, the ability to pie corners and remain compact during movement in close quarters immediately jumps out. Fully ambidextrous, users can also setup the rifle in left-hand configuration if so desired.
