Macallan 200 Year Anniversary

It is not uncommon for long-lived whiskey companies to produce special releases. It is even more common when it celebrates an anniversary. However, Macallan always goes one step further. This Macallan 200 Year Anniversary release will include an 84-year-old Macallan whisky distilled in 1940. This makes it the oldest single-malt Scotch in the world. To give you some perspective, 1940 was the same year Winston Churchill became Prime Minister of England.

The Macallan has created two versions of their celebration offering. The first one we will look at is called Time: Space Mastery. Priced at a mere $1,500, it is the version most people will have access to. It is a combination of two bottles, each with a different Scotch. The outer halo bottle will house the 84-year-old, while the inner bottle will house another vintage. This inner Scotch was first produced at the new Macallan distillery in 2018—a combination of old and young. Of course, any special anniversary release requires its unique packaging. This decanter comes in a bright red box coated in 200 origami thorns.

200 Years of Excellence

The second version is the real prize. Time: Space is the gigantic 84-year-old and 5-year-old combination package. The two bottles, one inside the other, are housed in an enormous display with a pouring container. All are coated in 200 thorns. This packaging is a work of art in and of itself. With only 200 in existence, it will be highly sought after.

Kirsteen Campbell, The Macallan’s Master Whisky Maker, spoke about selecting whisky from the 1940s to commemorate the brand’s 200-year journey. “As a Whisky Mastery Team, we get to time travel – choosing whisky crafted by our predecessors while laying down casks for future generations,” Campbell remarked. “Nosing, tasting, and selecting whisky created over eight decades ago is an exceptionally rare occasion that I will treasure forever.”

It Includes the Oldest Scotch in the World

She also emphasized the excitement surrounding the 2018 vintage. “Selecting a younger cask gives us a glimpse into The Macallan’s future. The launch of our new distillery in 2018 was a significant moment, and this whisky embodies the evolution of our craft.”

I have always believed that you should order Scotch that is old enough to order itself. The TIME: Space collection certainly meets that criteria. I know what you are thinking: “Thanks for the information, but how much is it?” The Limited Time: Space offerings are estimated to cost approximately $150,000.00 each. That is, if you can even get one. They are also certain to see an auction, and I have already seen prices as high as $230,000.00.

So, should you buy one? If you have $1500.00 paying around, I will say yes. For those of us who enjoy Scotch, an 84-year-old whisky calls to us like a siren. It is as much a piece of history as it is a drink. The Macallan has consistently produced a fine Scotch, and I am certain this will be equally good.
