Two officers responded to a call of an assault in progress with a knife at 1974 Hughes Ave., Bronx at approximately 7:47 p.m., police said.

The officers encountered two female victims in the lobby who had sustained knife wounds. The officers then confronted Cornell Lockhart, a 67-year-old male, in the lobby, according to police. He was armed with a knife in his right hand.

After repeatedly commanding Lockhart to drop the knife, both officers discharged their firearms, striking Lockhart. Police said the officers fired their weapons nine times. Lockhart succumbed to his injuries.

The NYPD body camera pilot program launched in April last year, with 1,200 of its officers wearing the VIEVU devices. The department reportedly plans on deploying 5,000 cameras by the end of 2018. The goal is equipping all 22,000 NYPD patrol officers with body cameras by the conclusion of 2019.
