VIDEO: Off-Duty Cop Shoots, Kills New Year’s Eve Robber in Georgia

New Year’s Eve is a time of celebration and fun. And for many people that includes alcohol. So, Big John’s package store in Stone Mountain, Ga., was conducting a brisk business at 11 p.m. on Dec. 31; the same time a suspect allegedly tried to rob the store and got taken out by an off-duty cop.

According to WSTV, the off-duty officer is a member of Pine Lake Police Department working security at the store.

Video shows a man walking into the store and brandishing a gun. Those in the store say he also told everyone to get down. However, in less than one second, the robber received fire from the off-duty cop.

“I’m behind the cash register helping a customer out,” employee Ture Ayanno said. “Guy comes in, points a gun at me, says, ‘Everybody get down.’ I don’t think he had a chance to get the whole word out.”

The unidentified man immediately fled the store. Video shows the masked man knocking down a  customer also trying to get out the down, as well as other customers fleeing in various directions to get out of danger.

The robber was able to get outside the store, but he collapsed just outside the door, which is where police found him. Authorities took the robber to Grady Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Investigators with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation are investigating the shooting.

Analysis of Off-Duty Cop, and the Robber

Now the above video shows what happened inside the store. However, there is other video that reveals more, including the incompetence of the robber. It is obvious that the robber hadn’t studied his target. In fact, he might have never even entered the store before, as he had difficulty even getting through the door.

The video also shows the security guard meeting aggression with overwhelming force, which could be called for in this situation. However, he might want to work on accuracy. While the shots injured no one but the assailant, several customers were near the robber. Also, several shots missed and went through the front windows. In this case, the good guy won, but he might want to be a little more careful in the future.
