The Ruger No.1 Light Sporter epitomizes the user-friendly designs Ruger has become synonymous with over the years. Chambered in .222 Remington, this 7.25-pound rifle offers a lighter alternative to the single-shot Ruger Medium Sporter model. Reviewer Stan Trzoniec explored the rifle’s design and range capabilities for the 2014 Gun Buyer’s Annual.
The Light Sporter’s outside appearance is typical Ruger,” noted Trzoniec. “The classic-styled stock is still there, and the forend is the same length on all models, which is called the Alexander Henry design.” A similar evaluation of the Light Sporter’s falling block action brought Trzoniec to trace the design’s lineage. Trzoniec commented, “While Sharps did pioneer the falling block and breechloading rifles back in the mid-1800s, Ruger improved the total concept of the gun for the up-to-date, American sportsperson.”

On the range, the single-shot Ruger No.1 Light Sporter produced impressive results. “…The No.1 Light Sporter is accurate, delivering groups around and below the 1 MOA I need for varmints at 100 yards and more,” noted Trzoniec, who came away convinced of the rifle’s abilities in hunting small game.
