One popular safe that can be used for storing a gun in your vehicle is the GunVault MV-500 STD. This safe can hold any full-sized handgun plus a few spare magazines. It’s a rapid-access safe so you can open it in a few seconds, and it comes with a metal cable that allows you to secure the safe to the bottom of your seat. If you’re looking for a more general safe that you can use in the car but also in your home, this is definitely it.
If you want something more permanent that you don’t need to take in and out of the vehicle, you may want to consider the Console Vault. The Console Vault is a gun vault that simply replaces the center console in your vehicle. It’s made of 12-gauge steel, has drill-resistant locks and is designed so it can’t be pried open with tools. You can buy the Console Vault with a combination lock or with a key lock. The reason I like this vault is because it’s more discreet looking. The outside of your center console stays the same and the vault is only noticeable when you lift up the console to access it. Also, since this replaces the inside of your center console, you can fit a lot of valuable items in it, such as your gun, cash and jewelry, whereas with a lot of the gun vaults you can only store your gun and a magazine or two. From a convenience standpoint, if you have to leave your gun in your car often, this is probably the best type of gun safe for you.
Titan Security Products is another company that allows you to have a permanently mounted gun safe in your vehicle. The Titan Pistol Vault can be mounted underneath or to the side of your seat for extremely quick access, thanks to the two mounting brackets. This safe is made of 14-gauge steel and doesn’t require any batteries since it uses the Simplex push-button locking system. What I like about this safe is that opening the safe causes the grip of the gun to move upwards, allowing you to get a quick grip. In other words, you don’t have to reach inside the safe and fumble around to get your grip.
If a permanently mounted safe isn’t for you and you’re looking for something simpler and less expensive you should take a look at the Gum Creek Vehicle Handgun Mount. This allows you to mount your gun in a holster directly below the steering wheel for easy access. This type of setup is not a safe and if your vehicle gets broken into the gun is not secured from a thief taking it. But if you’re going on a four-hour road trip and don’t want a gun on your hip for comfort reasons, then this handgun mount would make sense.
Another mount that is similar to the Gum Creek is the DeSantis Kingston Car Seat Holster. But instead of mounting the gun below the steering wheel, you actually mount the gun on the front of the seat, directly between your legs. The Kingston holster includes a nylon belt that you simply put over your seat so that your pistol hangs right in front of you and you don’t have to reach far at all to draw it.
If mounting the pistol underneath the steering wheel or in front of the seat doesn’t appeal to you, then the Grassburr Leather Works Mount may interest you. The Grassburr mount can be mounted from the top or from the side, allowing you to mount the gun in several different areas of your vehicle.
The CrossBreed mount allows you to choose several different holster types that you may want to mount in your vehicle, including the Ohai, Belly Band or Last Ditch holsters.
Of course, handguns aren’t the only firearms that need to be stored in a vehicle. What if you need to secure a rifle or shotgun? Well, just like for handguns, there are plenty of companies that produce safes for your long guns. One in particular that I’ve had my eye on for a while is the TruckVault. The TruckVault is a large metal vault that can slide into the back of your pick-up, SUV, van or pretty much any type of vehicle. The vaults come as large as 48 inches wide and 55 inches long to store a number of long guns as well as other gear. Also, for added convenience, the TruckVault has an option that will allow you to quickly access the vault by a remote key fob.
Similar to the TruckVault is the TruckBunker, made by the Heracles Research Corporation. The TruckBunker goes in the cab of your truck underneath the seats. It’s a large vault that allows to you store numerous long guns. Plus, you can secure the TruckBunker via tie-downs so you don’t have to do any drilling if you don’t want to.
If you carry concealed every day like I do, you know there are multiple places you’re not allowed to bring a gun.
For instance, every time you mail a package at the post office you have to leave your gun in your car. When you go to any federal building, the gun must remain in your vehicle, and any time you go to the courthouse you obviously can’t be carrying.
Of course, there are other times when you have to leave your gun in your car, such as when you go to church or when you visit a business that doesn’t allow guns.
Personally, I try to avoid these places (except church) as much as possible, because I hate not having my gun on me. Plus, I don’t like leaving the gun in my car where it could be stolen.

But sometimes you don’t have a choice, and if you have to leave your gun in your car, I believe it should be as secure as possible.
Luckily, with all of the new products on the market these days, it’s a lot easier to keep your gun secure so that it will still be there after mailing a package or paying a speeding ticket at the courthouse.
