With the growing popularity of red dot-style optics for handguns, it seems everyone is making one. Add to the mix that most modern handguns now come optics ready, and the market is exploding. Vortex is a company that has been at the forefront of quality red dot optics. Today, they are adding to their lineup with the Vortex Defender-XL.

Walking the Line Between Competition and EDC – Vortex Defender-XL
The Vortex Defender-XL is a green dot optic designed for competition and EDC. It has an exceptionally large window, which provides excellent peripheral vision and allows quick and easy sight acquisition and follow-up shots. It also gives better down-range vision, which is critical for both competition and defensive shooting.
The optic has features well beyond its price range. They include a shake-awake function, a Shockshield Polymer insert to protect against hard, daily abuse, and a 25,000-hour battery life. In setting 6, the battery will last an equivalent of 1041 days. The optic also has an auto-shutoff feature. This feature goes to work when the optic has been still for 10 minutes. This is a solid battery saver.

Deltapoint Pro Footprint
The Vortex Defender-XL uses a Deltapoint Pro footprint and works on almost any optics-cut handgun. A unique feature of the optic is the Fast Rack texturing. This is set on the front of the optics lens and provides a grip surface for racking the handgun on things such as tables or other available surfaces. This is a tip of the hat to EDC shooters who are looking for an optic that understands their needs. If you are forced to operate the handgun one-handed, having a good surface to rack your slide with is essential.
On the range, I found several things that stood out. First was the size and clarity of the glass. It allowed me excellent clear vision downrange. The second was the crispness of the dot. In some less expensive glass we can get haze around the dot even in low brightness settings. That is certainly not the case here. I found the controls on the Vortex Defender-XL to be easy to access and intuitive. Lastly, I give Vortex kudos for the use of a green dot.
The human eye has an easier time acquiring the color green over red. This move to green has been a challenge because generating a green dot in the past has proven to be a big power drain in the battery. Vortex has solved that. It is also a great option for those people who suffer from color blindness. With this condition, the color red is almost impossible to pick up. For those who still love the red color on their dots, fear not. The Defender-XL is offered with red dot options and a variety of dot sizes to fit your needs.

Vortex Defender-XL
Vortex has never disappointed me with its offerings. They provide products for the everyday shooter at a price that won’t break the bank. With that, we still get quality optics that serve our needs for a very long time. If you are looking for an optic that bridges competition and EDC applications, I would suggest exploring the Vortex Defender-XL.
