With the popularity of their Orion line of shotguns, Weatherby addresses customer calls for 20-gauge variants that mirror 12-gauge offerings. The recent release offers three different choices with two field versions for hunting and one sporting version for clay shooting.
Weatherby Orion 20-Gauge Shotguns
The three latest 20-gauge variants mirror their 12-gauge offerings but are built on a smaller, dedicated action. Both field versions are available in either 26- or 28-inch barrel lengths, with matte or gloss finish, depending on model. The finish selection is applied to both the metalwork and wood.
However, the Sporting model features a set of 30-inch ported barrels, with gloss finish on both the metalwork and wood. The Sporting model also includes a four-way adjustable comb, enabling shooters to fine-tune the fit of the shotgun. At 5 ounces heavier than the 6.2 pounds of the field models, the Sporting model has a more deliberate swing.
Nestled in the Turkish walnut stock lies a selectable barrel system, allowing the shooter to decide which barrel fires first. The field versions feature a gentle Prince of Whales grip, while the Sporting model comes with a standard pistol grip. Checkering on all three models is precision cut and 22 LPI for a good grip, no matter the conditions.
All three models feature auto ejectors, mechanical trigger and a manual safety. Orion shotguns ship with a set of interchangeable chokes—flush mount for field models and extended/knurled on the Sporting model. The factory chokes are rated for steel shot up to the modified construction.
“This Orion 20 gauge has been the single most requested shotgun customers have been asking for. We are excited with how well it feels and performs, and we look forward to seeing people hitting the field with them this fall.” – Luke Thorkildsen – VP of Sales, Marketing, and Product Development.
