Ship manufacturer Austal USA has announced the successful launch of the future USS Jackson (LCS 6). The vessel is a Littoral Combat Ship primarily designed to operate in near-shore environments, but it is also capable of open ocean operations. In 2010, the company was awarded a contract worth $3.5 billion by the U.S. Navy to construct ten 127-meter Independence-variant LCS class ships.
“The successful completion of this important milestone for the LCS program is directly attributed to the hard work and dedication of Austal’s incredible team of shipbuilding professionals,” said Austal USA president Craig Perciavalle. “I’m so proud of our team, especially when you consider how fast we’ve grown over the past few years while still being able to successfully support this very important program with these cutting edge, high quality, highly capable yet cost-effective warships.”
