Mossberg Patriot Bolt Action in 400 Legend

The interest in modern straight-walled cartridges and rifles built to hunt continues to rise. With several states allowing this conveyance, new rifles in big, thumping calibers give hunters a better tool in specific locales for deer season. The Mossberg Patriot 400 Legend becomes the latest such entry.

Mossberg Patriot 400 Legend Details

Mossberg has already ventured down this road before to good success. It previously launched the Patriot in 350 Legend, bringing deer hunters a centefire, bolt-action rifle pushing a big, heavy bullet in locales where previously only shotgun hunting was allowed. Now Mossberg does it again, with an even bigger cartridge and bullet, with the 400 Legend.

The rifle comes in two different versions: one wearing a walnut stock, the other a black synthetic. Each sports a 20-inch threaded barrel. Based on Mossberg’s twin-lug, push-feed action, the barrels accommodate suppressor or muzzle brake attachment and include a protective thread cap.

The Patriot ships with weaver-style bases for mounting an optic. Each rifle also utilizes Mossberg’s LBA (Lightning Bolt Action) user-adjustable trigger. It delivers pull weights ranging from 2 to 7 pounds. Each rifle features a matte blue metal finish. Finally, these Patriots sports checkered bolt handles, spiral-fluted bolts and sling-swivel studs.

400 Legend Feature & Performance

Winchester launched the 400 Legend cartridge last year. It comprises a straight-walled case and delivers energy equivalent to the 450 Bushmaster. However, it comes with 20-percent less recoil. It also reportedly delivers 20-percent more energy than the famed 30-30 Win and 25-percent more energy than the popular 350 Legend. The 400 Legend also delivers 100-percent more energy than the timeless 12-gauge slug at 100 yards, but with 55-percent less recoil.
