Our home is our refuge, the one place we should always feel safe, at ease and secure. In a perfect world this would always be the case. However, this world is far from perfect and even in the sanctuary of where we abide we are not exempt from the possibility of a threat.

Living paranoid is never the answer. However, living prepared should be a priority. Having a good home-defense plan is essential. This plan of action should also be well understood by every member living in the home, whether it be for an unexpected tragedy, such as a fire, or an intruder. If a threat should somehow enter your home, you will definitely want a sound recourse of action to take. Because of this, the top recourse on my list is the Mossberg 590M Shockwave.
Features of the Mossberg 590M Shockwave
The 590M Shockwave is a 12-gauge, magazine-fed, pump-action firearm. Mossberg combined the convenience of a mag-fed shotgun with a non-NFA pump action platform, creating one of the most innovative home-defense firearms out there today. This gun will definitely give you an edge when it comes to home defense, as it thwarts many of the concerns found with traditional rifles or shotguns used for this purpose.
The 590M Shockwave comes with a 10-round magazine. Additionally, you can add the five-, 15- and 20-round mags as accessories. If you’re wondering about the process of inserting and releasing the magazines, the answer is quite simple. Mossberg designed the magazines with a special feed lip that allows it to be inserted with only a click. It is literally that simple. Releasing is also easy.
Benefits of a Magazine
A magazine with such high capacities reduces the need or worry of reloading. Utilizing buckshot for home defense also minimizes the worry of rounds going through walls. Even better, the magazine contributes to balancing out recoil due to the positioning on the firearm.
Additionally, the unique birds head textured grip aids in recoil management. This grip gives maximum control, while minimizing felt recoil in conjunction with the cob-styled, tactical fore-end, which is strapped for the support hand, ensuring controlled and smooth operation. Therefore, the Shockwave is easy to run.
The Mossberg 590M Shockwave weighs just under 7 pounds and measures 27.5 inches. This makes the 590M very easy to wield. This also makes it an exceptional choice for maneuvering in close quarters, such as through hallways and around corners.
The 590M also features non-binding twin action bars, positive steel-to-steel lockup and dual extractors. Additionally, Mossberg incorporated the safety at the top of the grip to be easily reached with the thumb. Everything about this firearm has been designed in a user-friendly format.
Another brilliant move by Mossberg was completing the gun with an anodized-aluminum receiver that has been drilled and tapped for the convenience of adding optics. This feature rounds out the 590M Shockwave as a go-to option for home defense.
Fun and Effective
Aside of the many unquestionable features the 590M Shockwave offers as a complete home-defense firearm, it is also a joy to run. I spent a great deal of time running this beauty at the 2018 Athlon Outdoors Rendezvous. It is hands down one of the most enjoyable firearms I have ran. You gotta love that pump action combined with being magazine fed.
I ran both buckshot and birdshot with ease from various positions and had zero malfunctions. I definitely recommend anyone looking to protect their home to look no further than the Mossberg 590M Shockwave. For even more info, please visit Mossberg.com.
